Waste Heat Conversion

Waste Heat

Concept

Many industrial processes and fuel-driven heat engines generate large amounts of waste heat that simply passes into the atmosphere. Waste heat streams may be liquid or gaseous and have temperatures from slightly above ambient temperature to over 300°C. These temperatures are moderate compared to the levels of combustion which exceeds 1000°C. Therefore, typical heat engines cannot process waste heat to convert it into electricity.

The ergion heat engine technology has been designed to produce power from moderate input temperatures. It is therefore best suited for waste heat recovery. In such a scenario, the waste gases or liquids are intercepted before being released to the environment. Their heat is extracted and used as energy source for the ergion heat engine, which produces additional electricity from what otherwise would remain unused.

A large amount of energy in the form of moderate temperature fluids is released from process heating equipment, and much of this energy is wasted. The situation is similar for moderate temperature waste heat generated by equipment such as micro-turbines, diesel engines, fuel cells and other electricity producing technologies. The ergion waste heat recycling concept has been designed to tap into this enormous potential.
