Solar cogeneration is a highly efficient way of using the solar energy by converting it at the same time into electric power, heat and eventually cooling. Cogeneration is widely spread for energy production with fossil fuels, but it is still rarely used in solar systems - ergion is committed to solutions that unlock the full potential of solar cogeneration.
Cogeneration uses the heat that would normally be wasted in the process of stand-alone power generation. Thereby, the overall system efficiency is up to four times higher than the efficiency of conventional solar electricity production - this is why the system offers significant economic and ecologic benefits.
The ergion concept is based on modular, de-central energy technologies with small and mid-scale systems. The design allows for the integration of existing installations and a step-wise upgrading. It is also possible to link the system to a biogas combustion leading to weather-independent off-grid solutions.
The co-generated heat can be used for a wide range of applications. Examples are industrial process heat, heating of buildings and domestic hot water. The co-generated heat can also be the energy source for specially designed supplementary cooling systems. The co-generated solar electricity is subsidised like any other form of solar power generation (for example photovoltaic power).
The main components of the system include a solar collector, a special heat engine with an electric generator, pumps, heat buffers and a specially designed adaptive system control. Over the last years, ergion has concentrated on building solar cogeneration solutions with a high overall performance and an attractive return on investment (ROI) for the user.
The environmental impact of solar cogeneration is based on its high overall efficiency. The system makes the best use of the equipment (and the energy used to produce this equipment) and contributes to an energy production free of greenhouse gases.
